Reuse, recycle, renew. If it sounds familiar, especially to the older generation, it’s because it’s an old wartime slogan, along the lines of ‘make do and mend’, except it can also apply to posts you write on your blog to get more life and more traffic out of them.

Let’s start with a nice 600 to 800 word post. Can be more, can be less, depending on your niche. If you know your readership has a short attention span then 400 words might be enough or 1200 words might not be enough, but whatever you consider to be a typical blog post for you. 2 or 3 pictures, plenty of descriptive text, well spread and easily readable. Before you publish it, save it to a Word document, pictures and all. Save it as another document, giving it a nice, keyword rich name with hyphens or underscores between each word, edit it to include links to your blog and any related products that are worth a mention in the same breath as your article (never miss a trick to possibly grab a sale).

From your Word document, pick up some salient points or grab the highlights and turn them into PowerPoint slides of no more than a dozen words per slide, making sure the whole presentation makes sense as it stands alone. Can you begin to see how to make more use of your blog posts?

Save each slide as a jpg image file and use these to make a movie slide show or just use the slideshow function of PowerPoint and use video screen capture software like CamStudio (free) or Camtasia whilst recording yourself reading the entire article or even free talking the gist of the article. Put the resultant video up on YouTube and include the YouTube URL in the blog post and Word document. (This does get a bit circular at times, but bear with it all).

Convert the Word document to a PDF file and we now have 5 versions of the same thing… A blog post, a Word doc, a PDF doc, a presentation and a video and if you really want to, create a 6th version by extracting the audio from the video and saving it as an MP3.

Make sure the titles of these are all keyword rich and slightly different. In fact save several versions of each with slightly different, keyword rich titles. As before, separate each word with underscores or hyphens. Also make sure that every version has written or spoken links to your website or offer. You may want to use a link shortener to make this easier for listeners, viewers or readers.

Now have a good look around and find as many places as you can that specialise in each of these methods of distribution. Article sites will take the Word doc, document repositories will take the pdf and  / or the slideshow. There are many video sites to put your movie up on and find out just how many audio repositories there are that will accept podcast material.

Now it doesn’t have to stop there. You can use RSS feeds (see previous article) for existing sites and chances are that many of the distribution sites you’ve just posted things to will have RSS feeds too. Guess what? There are a number of places just dying to accept new RSS feed and you can supply that need. Better still, there are a few sites that will bulk distribute your RSS feed for you.

Finally, find some blog directories – yes, sites that are just lists of blogs and add your POST URL (not the root site) to each. With about 2 to 3 hours work (from start to end), you could end up with over 100 backlinks or references to your blog and every one of them is sure to generate a few visitors if you have been creative with the variety and distribution of your keywords and titles.

Try not to repeat titles between different document formats – so make each one look like a separately crafted piece of work. When it comes to article sites, there are some that take longer to accept your work than others, so find them out and make sure you distribute to them and are accepted by them first, as they are the ones who dislike duplicate content the most too. Make a few changes to the Word document between each article site to avoid this problem.

By far the most time on the first time around will be finding the various sites and setting up memberships to each. Once you’ve done it once though, future run throughs will be much faster. In fact, your best bet will be to write up a step by step instruction sheet so that the whole thing can be outsourced, with you merely providing a ‘seed’ article and perhaps the presentation video already voiced over. You can then leave the renaming and distribution to your outsourcer, freeing you to start creating the next one.

And that is how you can make more use of your blog posts.
